Hot Weather Pet Peeve

I have a pet peeve. Well, to be honest, I have a few of them. But this particular one bothers me more at this time of year. You see, there is a lot of press about the dangers of leaving your pet in the car, water safety for pets, keeping pets well hydrated in the hot weather, etc. But my pet peeve gets very little attention. Have you guessed it yet? It’s walking your dog on hot asphalt, pavement, sand, whatever.

I get worked up when I see people casually strolling on a sidewalk with their canine companion next to them when it is sunny and warm. It seems most people are clueless how hot the ground can be. For example, when the air temperature is 77 degrees, asphalt in the sun is about 125 degrees!!! Metal, sand, cement and other surfaces can really heat up. People wear shoes. Dogs rarely have foot protection.

Keep your pet’s health and comfort first. Before taking your pet to an outdoor festival, walk on the beach, or drive for an ice cream, consider how hot it is outside and how comfortable your pet will be.
