Shocking Vet Story Goes Viral

I am shocked. Horrified. Disgusted. Sickened. I don’t think there is a word that describes how I feel about the recent Internet story about the young veterinarian that used a bow and arrow to shoot a cat in the head. Then, she had the audacity to post  her picture  on Facebook holding the dead cat with a comment about how awesome she is. Just typing this makes me nauseated. Here’s a link to the story if you can stomach it: http://edition.cnn.com/2015/04/18/us/texas-veterinarian-facebook-cat-shot/index.html

I know for a fact the vast majority of my colleagues are as devastated as I am with this news. We dedicate our lives to animals. We made the decision to pursue advanced education for the betterment of animals, whatever kind. For me it is pets. I love my pets. I care deeply about all pets. The cat that was killed was someone’s pet. I can’t imagine what grief that family is experiencing.

I am sad. I am sad for the cat’s family. I am sad for the people that had entrusted their beloved pets to this woman for care. It’s an enormous betrayal. I am sad for my profession. I don’t understand how a person that has so little heart and such poor judgment could make it through veterinary school. I don’t know what will happen to her career. In my opinion, she has lost the right to call herself an animal doctor. She has also lost much more: respect as a human being in society.
